Ani was born into a family where the people and society were more influenced by Tibetan culture and traditions.
Growing up, Due to her physically abusive father, She had to face some serious problems. Her parents were not formally educated.
Her mother and father’s relationship were not good. Her mom was very simple and innocent housewife whereas her dad was into Buddhist hymns and chants.
In order to escape from unhealthy family relationships and environment, At the age of 13 years old, She decided to become a nun. And the decision was fully supported by her parents. She went to the Nagi Gompa located in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu.
Even though her dad was violent it was not his mistake because he was grown up like that. So, later, After she joined Nagi Gompa, She tried to communicate with her father, even though it was very difficult for both of them, They talked and fixed their problem.
After that, She was like a mother to her father. She took care of him until his last breath. At the last moment of his father’s death, Her dad thanked her saying “Thank you for being my mother in the form of my daughter”.
She has two younger brothers. Currently, One is abroad and one brother is helping her in Nepal.
Educational Background
Talking about formal academics, Ani Choying Drolma went to the school ( Bouddha Pre-Primary School) and somehow managed to study till 5th grade. Due to some circumstances, She couldn’t make it further.
But Once she decided to become a nun, She joined Nagi Gompa and learned Buddhist meditation, chants, rituals, and ceremonies.
Her main Guru was Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche who died in the year 1996. She even worked as Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche’s personal health attendant until his death.

In the year 1994, Steve Tibbetts (An American guitarist and composer) met Ani Choying and proposed to her to record Tibetan music. They did two albums. The recordings, titled Chö and Selwa. That’s how her musical career started.
